Heart Failure

This is a common disorder, marked by a decreased ability of the heart to pump adequate amounts of blood throughout the body. Its incidence dramatically increases with age. Today, an estimated 5 million Americans are living with heart failure and another 550,000 will be diagnosed this year, according to the National Institutes of Health.

At the UConn Health Center, an experienced team of cardiologists and nurses treats patients with congestive heart failure. Both non-invasive and catheter-based diagnostics, such as angiography, are used to detect even the mildest form of heart failure. New methods such as cardiac resynchronization therapy and novel medications that help patients breath more easily, or combinations of existing medications are offered.

All care is backed by ongoing research into the causes of heart failure - research that will ultimately improve ways heart failure is treated.
